Putting in a new patio begins with designing how you want it to look. There are a few things that should influence the design stage if you want a patio that will serve your needs for many years.

1. Location

The first decision is where to locate the patio. Most often, patios are sited right off the house, usually with a back or side door opening out onto them. The benefit of this location is that the patio is easy to access, which is especially helpful when entertaining and bringing food in and out of the house. There may be other locations worth considering, though, such as tucking the patio into a hidden area of the garden so that it can be surrounded by beautiful landscaping.

2. Shape

Although plain square and rectangular patios can be quick to install, they can also be a bit boring. The sharp, straight lines don't blend in organically with the natural features in the landscaping, which can make the patio seem out of place. Half-round patios, with the straight edge against the home, are a simple shape that has a softer edge since there are no right angles. For free-standing patios that aren't attached to the house, you can opt for ovals, circles, or even more freeform shapes with plenty of curves.

3. Size

Although the final size of the patio does depend on the available space and your budget, there may be a few other factors that contribute to the decision. How you plan to use the patio is one of the major factors. A patio simply for sitting and dining doesn't need to be large, but one that is meant to feature a large grill or outdoor kitchen will need more space. Larger patios are also ideal if you plan to entertain a lot in the backyard.

4. Materials

There are many material options for patios, which can be used alone or you can combine materials. Paver and brick patios are simple, inexpensive, and come in a range of shapes and styles. You can also combine pavers with wide gravel joints for a different look. Concrete is extremely versatile, as it can be stamped, dyed, or poured into forms so that it is more attractive than a gray cement pad. The material choice depends on your budget and design preference.
